May 16, 2016 - Updated: May 16, 2016

Your pantry ingredients

are not just for cooking

- they work wonders in

cleaning too!

Vinegar, baking soda, salt - staples in almost every pantry, that can double as household cleaners! Once you give a shot at being your cleaners, you'll be looking at your pantry ingredients in a whole new light!

Soap scum, stains, odors, and various other common cleaning pickles can be treated with five household ingredients you most likely have in your pantry. You can frugally clean your entire home with the same ingredients you cook with!

1. White Vinegar

Avoid having your home smell like a pickle when using vinegar, by simply adding some essential oils to your mix - or better yet make your own citrus scented vinegar to help lessen the smell. Regardless of whether you can stand the smell, vinegar is a wonderful cleaner.

  • 1. Carpet: Use a 50/50 mix and pour directly on the stain. Blot with a white cloth.
  • 2. Washing machine: Add 3/4 cup white vinegar to your machine and run empty on a hot cycle.
  • 3. Coffeemaker: Measure a 50/50 mix in the coffee carafe. Pour in the water dispenser, brew, and empty pot. Brew 2-3 additional pots with just cold water - or until the vinegar smell diappears!
  • 4. Toilets: Mix 1/2 cup baking soda and 1/4 cup white vinegar in the bowl. Soak for at least 15-30 minutes, scrub, and flush.
  • 5. Glass cleaner: Combine 1 cup water, 1 tablespoon white vinegar, and 1 tablespoon rubbing alcohol in a spray bottle. Spray on glass and wipe clean with a dry, lint free cloth.
  • 6. Hardwood floors: 1/2 cup white vinegar, 4L warm water and 2-3 drops essential oils (Lemon works great!). Mix together in a mop bucket and give those floors a good old fashioned hand wash.

2. Salt - Kosher Please!

You know that big blue box of kosher salt sitting on your shelf? It's great extra muscle for cleaning stuck-on food from pots, pans, and stove accessories. Mix it with a little water to make a paste, apply, scrub, and rinse clean. Great for stove grate and cast iron pots!

3. Baking Soda

For so much more than eliminating fridge odors or creating volcanos! There isn't a room in your house that you can't utilize this product. It's a remarkable cleaning solution for things like removing baked-on food and polishing your sink.

  • 1. Sinks: Sprinkle in your sink with a squirt of dish soap, then scrub and rinse.
  • 2. Carpet and mattresses: Smells in carpet and mattresses need just a little sprinkle of baking soda. Let it sit for up to an hour and vacuum up.
  • 3. Disposal: Mix 50/50 baking soda and lemon juice to make a runny paste. Pour down the disposal and let sit for five minutes. Run with cold water about one minute.

4. Cream of Tartar

Use this baking staple with a little water, lemon juice, or if you need to whiten hydrogen peroxide. Simply use a tablespoon or two and make a paste.

  • 1. Grout: Apply the paste with a scrub brush for grout and sinks, or a soft sponge for smooth surfaces.
  • 2. Small stainless-steel appliances: Apply paste to a damp sponge and wipe with the grain. Rinse with a clean sponge and dry thoroughly.
  • 3. Dishes: Stains in coffee and tea cups and silverware scrapes will disappear quickly with the paste and a sponge or scrub brush.

5. Lemons

Lemons and their juice aren't just for cooking and lemonade, they have some excellent cleaning properties as well. The next time life hands you lemons, use them to clean!

  • 1. Cutting boards: Use half a lemon, sprinkle a little kosher salt on the lemon or board and rub in the direction of the wood.
  • 2. Soap scum: Slice in half, rub the fruit side on any faucet that has soap scum, then rinse and dry.
  • 3. White clothing: Soak whites in 1/4 to 1/2 cup lemon juice with water, and was like normal.
